Dear Pran,

My father, Jatinder Nath Kapur, passed away last January (2009) during a visit to New Delhi. Like you, he spent his childhood in Lahore, and he told us many interesting anecdotes about his life there. I am a writer and plan to write a book based on his family, with Lahore as a setting in the early sections. I was wondering if you possibly knew my grandfather, Niranjan Das Kapur, who also lived on Nisbat Road--his sons were Narinder Nath Kapur, Rajinder Nath Kapur and my father Jatinder Nath. Niranjan Das Kapur ran an insurance company. His father was Sunder Das Kapur, and I believe there was a small street named after him (Sunder Das Street). Could I call upon you for information about the city in the 40s if needed during the course of my writing? I would much appreciate it, as I live in the US and don't know of any ex-Lahore residents here. Unfortunately, almost all of my father's generation has now passed away.

I have enjoyed your book "Lahore, A Sentimental Journey" very much and am inspired by it as well.

Best wishes,
Parul Kapur Hinzen

Dear Mr. Nevile,

I am a college professor from the US, in Delhi for six months on a Fulbright. I am very interested in bhajans and sufiana kalam. My own research concerns the meaning of the Christian/English category "saint" during the colonial period in relation to fakirs, sannyasis, sadhus, jogis etc.

I would like to hear one of your concerts and lectures, but I failed to find you at the Habitat Center last week when I went there looking for the show listed in Delhi Diary. Could you send me the dates and venues of your upcoming events over the next few months?

Thank you very much.
Sincerely,

Sir,
I am a regular at all functions and concerns arranged by you. The last one on July 8, 2009 was a delight particularly for the commendable rendering of the old time Ghazals by Dr. Radhika Chopra. The selection was really nice. I don't know if you maintain digital audio archive of the concets organized by you. I would like to have the recording of the said concert for personal pleasure and collection. I shall be glad to have your positive response.

My Dear Sir,

With due respect and humble submission,I beg to draw your kind attention that this is one of my countless attempts to reach you, and needless to say once again that I am an ardent admirer of yours. In fact,I am growing accustomed to your literature.

But now,it seems to me that you have decided, not to reply my letters of deep admiration,as this is one of my countless attempts to reach you. Please tell me ,is it good to break the heart, you are ruling? It's a pity! it's a pity! that I am still writing to you.In fact, you are my source of inspiration. That is why,I use to write to time and again despite your apathy towards me.Upon my words, you are absolutely unique and beyond compare.
And you are my ideal of a perfect personality.

Therefore,I'll be grateful to you,if you please take the trouble of sending me your much awaited and cherished autographed photograph, for memento.Because when I'll grow too old to dream,I'll have this memento of yours ,to remember. Please take a very good care of yourself.
With high regards

Dear Pran Neville

I'm trying to source a high resolution digital scan or medium format transparency of the following work:

Colonel Antoine Polier watching a Nautch after a picture by Tilly Kettle. Faizabad or Lucknow c.1780

The Historic Houses Trust of NSW, based in Sydney, Australia, is interested in reproducing the image as a graphic display in an upcoming exhibition.

As I've located the image reproduced in an article by you published in The Spectrum, I'm hoping you can help, or direct me to the owner/collection or another means of obtaining photographic material suitable for reproduction?

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Many thanks, and kind regards

Dear Pran ji, Greetings! I got your reference from Sri Manna Srinivasan and Smt Shovana Narayan. I am a research scholar, author and student of Carnatic classical music from Bangalore.

I am glad to inform you that i have recently authored a book on the history of Mysore titled 'Splendours of Royal Mysore: the untold story of the Wodeyars'.on the political, social, economic and cultural history of Mysore State and its ruelrs, the Wodeyars, Haidar Ali and Tipu Sultan. (details on my website www.vikramsampath.com) I am currently working on another research project on the evolution of Carnatic music in the royal courts of South India.

During my research on Mysore i came across the character of Gauhar Jaan. Hoping to do a small monograph on her and hence seeking your kind help for some information on her. I would be very grateful if you could provide me some info or leads about this singer and her life & times.

Warm regards

Dear Mr Pran Nevile,

You will be glad to know that two of the of the 15 songs rendered by K.L. Saigal which were considered to be ‘missing’, have been ‘found’. These are movietrack songs from Bengali film ‘Jeeban Maran’ (1939), produced by New Theatres, Calcutta, which were never released on 78 rpm records and were composed by Pankaj Mullick.

The best part of the story is that these songs have come alive with the release of the movie itself (also considered to be lost / destroyed) !!! The ilm ‘Jeeban Maran’ starring KL Saigal, Banu Bandyopadhyaya and Lila Desai in lead roles, is now available in the form of a set of two VCDs (very good quality video and good audio reproduction) released as a ‘Classic Collection’ and being marketed on the internet by Angel Digital (P) Limited (Link : http://angelvideo.in/files/details.php?id=90 )

All this by sheer accident, you can say, since I stumbled upon a reference to a VCD of 'Jeeban Maran (Bengali), 1939, on the website, followed through by obtaining a copy of the same from Angel Digital, Calcutta and checked for availability of the following movietrack songs :

Aaji Asamaye Jomunar Kule Keno
(A duet by Saigal & Suprova Ghosh; Lyrics : Ajay Bhattacharya)

Sakhi Ke Se Romoni Kaho …Kaanchan Barani Ke Bate Se Dhani
(A short duration song by Saigal ; Lyrics : Chandidas)

On hearing from you (and receiving your email ID), I will be glad to send you audio files of the missing songs.

This development comes as a very welcome event when New Theatres, Calcutta and innumerable fans are celebrating completion of 75 of this great institution. It is hoped that some of the Saigal and other films which are still available with an individual here or a collector there, are commercially released afresh as VCDs / DVDs by New Theatres as part of their diamond jubilee celebrations so that we can all enjoy the melody of classic songs.

KL SAIGAL WEBSITE :

A few years back I have revived my childhood interest in humming / singing Saigal songs after a gap of over 3 decades. Resources collected for pursuing my hobby came to be posted on the website at www.kundanlalsaigal.com

Generous help from music collectors has led to all the 170 songs (other than the 'missing' 15 and against 185 recorded songs listed in Harmandir Singh Hamraaz's compendium - 'Jab Dil Hi Toot Gaya') being posted in the public domain for the very first time. In addition, mp3 files for several movietrack songs too have been posted.

PANKAJ MULLICK & KC DEY :

At the instance of Dr Manohar Lal Kapur, a respected USA-based music collector, I have extended the scope of the open-internet song documentation project to cover "The Immortal Musical Trio : KL Saigal, KC Dey & Pankaj Mullick"

I would also like to inform you that I have succeeded in collecting and posting a total of 277 classic songs on www.pankajmullick.com and www.krishnachandradey.com websites which I have updated recently.

Against a total of 493 KC Dey songs covered by various discography / song listings, I have managed to collect and post 98 audio mp3 files (including 8 additional songs not covered by any of the listings).

In respect of Pankaj Mullick, a relatively more popular singer, I have collected and posted 179 audio mp3 files. This includes 102 disc version songs against the total of 190 covered by different discography lists. In addition, I have posted 28 movietrack songs, 12 'Live' concert songs and 27 extra songs (including 'Live' & movietrack songs) which are not covered by any of the published song listings.

With kind regards

Sir,

I have been really inspired by your nostalgic write-ups on the stars of a long forgotten era in Hindi Film Music. You are doing a great service to Hindi Film Music by making people of this generation aware of the treasure, a generation which seems to think that music does not exist beyond Kishore Kumar and RD Burman. I am also constantly looking out for articles and programmes on this bygone era, and it is heartening to know that people are beginning to appreciate old film music. One of my favourite singer, Talat Mahmood's 10th death anniversary falls on May 9 this year. It would be wonderful if knowledgeable people like you throw some light on the man and his artistry.

I have been trying to find out what local term would have been used in late 19th century Lahore to refer to the highest level of "tawaif" or dancer/nautch girl, particularly if she were a Hindu. Kipling describes such a figure he calls Lalun in "On the City Wall."
I was hoping that as someone hailing from Lahore you might be able to help me out

Dear Praansaab

I have been a great follower and admirer of Faiz amongst other poets. Its unfortunate that I am arriving in Delhi for a visit on the 20th and unable to attend the music program at the Habitat centre. Radhika Chopra sings beautifully - great choice. the purpose of my email is to find out whether you will be recording this music and if I will have an opportunity to buy it at a later date. I also have a friend who is passionate about KL Saigal and where I could purchase some special recordings from while I am in Delhi for 2 weeks.

Thanks
Ritu

I am fond of most things related to art, culture, music etc,and old film music is something that is especially very close to my heart.I would like to know if new members are enrolled in the K.L.SAIGAL memorial circle. If so,then I would like to be a member of the same.I have come to know of this circle recently, and have attended a few programs organised by it,including the last at IIC ON 13TH September.
