Sir,' I got your reference from your website. In connection to my literary work on Wajid Ali Shah in Calcutta, let me put forward a query, which has come to my mind. Is it a right statement? , In Colonial Calcutta, the 18th century Bengali elites ( baboos or the feudals) were unaware of Indian classical dance. The dancers hired by them for entertainment in their court were basically conventional non-classical ones and most of them were prostitutes. However, Calcuttans of Colonial age, FIRST tasted the flavour of classical dance in the court of Wajid Ali Shah at Matiya Burz. Kathak was first introduced to them and heralds the onset of classical dance in the city, particularly in the houses of Bengali elites. Before Wajid Ali, the practise of Classical dance in the court of the Bengali baboos was not familiar. I earnestly solicits your opinion and clarification to discover the truth. I got a chance to listen KL Sehgal song at the age of 18 years when my friend V.K.Rawat gave me a cassette. Since then, gradually I have developed addiction for Sehgal's song. His voice quality is not only outstanding but also rarest of rare- it seems it is filled with honey. There might be many great ghazal singers but only 3-4 singers were able to do complete justice with Ghalib. Definitely, Kl Sehgal is the best among them. He is one of the greatest singers in the likes of Lata , Rafi and all classical masteros. These days one can find many jokers on different channels who try to impress with their nonsense dressing and dancing rather than singing. Many youth will be liking segals's song if they get the chance to listen a few of them. Nevile Sir, you have done a great service to the nation by bringing out this website. Regards to all those who appreciate good singing. |
